Keeping drugs out of the prison is a huge undertaking, and something we have to work tirelessly at for hours each day of the week. When drugs get into the prison, it can cause a number of problems. If an inmate is high on heroin for example, they can be impossible to contain and may cause harm to a visitor, inmate, or corrections officer. Gang leaders use the drugs to make lower-level gang members in jail have to sell them and kick up that money to the members who don’t want to get their hands dirty.
To keep the drugs out of the prison, we have a strong presence in the visitor center where we do a full body search on each visitor as well as scanning them through the x-ray machine. Even with prison time as a deterrent, some will try anything to get the drugs to their family or friends. Inmates in our facility talk about how easy it is to get drugs while incarcerated compared to when they were on the street. We have a real serious problem on our hands.
After Securus Technologies installed our updated inmate phone system, the installation team trained my officers to use the LBS software and informed us we could now use the system to easily detect the presence of drugs in the jail. If anyone on the phones talked about anything drug related, the alert feature tips us off immediately.
Since using the new system, we have picked up on conversations where inmates were talking about doing drugs in their cells, getting drugs in the mail, meeting with visitors who would pass them drugs, and even details about being ordered to sell drugs for gang leaders. The Securus Technologies system has been instrumental in cutting into our drug problem here at the prison.
